Born and raised in South East Queensland, Australia, I was educated at Griffith University, and then later in my career at the University of Southern Qld. For my undergraduate degree, I majored in Japanese language and history with a minor in international business.
Following graduation, I embarked on the JET program as a Coordinator for International Relations in local government in Osaka, Japan for a year in diplomacy and cultural exchange before returning to Australia to work in the hospitality industry for some 10 years primarily in resorts, hotels, retail and (Japanese) inbound tourism. This was interspersed with time overseas fulfilling my love of travel where I continued with similar work in Mexico and Canada and an additional year in Japan writing TOEIC ® examination questions for an IT company.
With a love of language cultivated initially during my time spent in Japan, I dabbled in translation and interpreting before embarking more seriously in this with ongoing study. Over the last decade with my more current career path as a teacher, I have formalised this with a Master of Applied Linguistics, a Master of TESOL, a Master of Education and teaching qualifications done in conjunction with Cambridge University through their intensive practical CELTA course. Despite a health setback, I was also able to complete coursework for a Doctorate of Education and am now a confirmed PhD candidate with Griffith University.
I have since continued my desire to remain up-to-date with trends in ESL through professional affiliations with organisations such as JALT (Japan Association for Language Teaching) and JAT (Japan Association of Translators) as well as examiner status with English proficiency examinations which require regular certification and training. This is in addition to having helped both Australian and international students as a student learning adviser at Bond University.
As a Justice of the Peace for the Qld Department of Justice, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to meet a wide range of people in the community. With relation to work, I also relish challenges that allow me to harness my cultural expertise and linguistic abilities, especially when in my position as a teacher, I am able to assist others to develop their language skills.
It was an honour in 2017 to be recognised by the University of Southern Queensland as a finalist in the Alumnus of the Year and by John Paul College as an Inductee in the Alumnus Walk of Fame. I am also honoured to obtain Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) more recently in 2023. Presently, I am also involved in the writing of textbooks aimed at adult students of English and a regular column in Japanese on raising bilingual children published in a number of Japanese newspapers overseas. In addition to previously working at Griffith University and Griffith College as a lecturer, my main passion now is helping students attain their linguistic goals at TAFE Qld where I teach migrants and international students.
